What was your favorite scene to film?
Going to Italy and being part of the Volturi scene was great. Dakota Fanning is fantastic. I was watching her movies before I was even acting. And I got to work with Michael Sheen and he’s an incredible, phenomenal actor and it was great to be able to learn from him and watch him do the scene and watch how it translates to the screen.

Compared to most of her Twilight: New Moon co-stars, 15-year-old Dakota Fanning — who plays the powerful Volturi Jane — is already an old hand at movie-making. But behind the star of hits like War of the Worlds (2005) and I Am Sam (2001) is a surprisingly normal student at an L.A. high school. On the Monday after New Moon’s record-breaking bow, Fanning made time for a quick pre-class chat with EW about the Twilight phenomenon and the joys of playing a villain.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where are you right now?
DAKOTA FANNING: I’m at school. I’m hiding from any teacher that would see me on my phone right now. But technically it’s allowed because it’s before school has started.

What’s it like to come back to high school now that the move is out?
That’s my life. That’s what’s normal to me. I don’t really know anything different. I’m really lucky that I get to go to school and have that normal life, whatever that is, and then also get to do what I love to do and be a part of really great projects.

In the “Twilight” franchise, the Cullen and Volturi vampires have taken divergent paths. One coven lives peacefully in rural Washington, the other rules the vampire world from Italy. But they share one key trait: They can smell blood. The Cullens avoid the temptation for human blood and instead dine on other animals, while the Volturi feast on people.

So what smell would force Dakota Fanning, who plays Volturi baddie Jane, to do a little human gorging of her own? “Orange chicken from Panda Express, which I had earlier today,” she told MTV News with a laugh at the “New Moon” red-carpet premiere. “So if someone smelled like orange chicken, I would for sure have to eat them. It’s the best! It’s so good!”

“The Insider” sits down with Dakota Fanning, Jamie Campbell Bower, Michael Sheen and Cameron Bright from The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

The foursome play members of the ruling vampire clan, the Volturi in the sequel to Twilight, and they open up about their characters’ evil intentions.

Veteran stage actor Michael Sheen says of playing his diabolical 2,000-year-old character, “I like the idea of someone who thinks of himself as a nice, sweet grandmotherly type but who’s actually a psycho killer underneath. … So, I like the idea of playing someone who is sort of soft, quite loving and thinks of himself as being very sentimental and then likes to pull people’s heads off.”

Dakota Fanning has a long history of playing nice girls, and tells “The Insider,” “It was the first time playing an evil character, but that was one of the reasons why i wanted to do it. It’s more fun playing bad girls, more fun than playing good girl.”
