Rock pioneer Joan Jett played a special Saturday night set at the Sundance Film Festival in celebration of “The Runaways,” the upcoming film about her ’70s L.A. all-girl rock band of the same name that had its festival premiere Sunday night. Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, the film’s stars, joined Jett on stage.

A private reception sponsored by SPIN, Blackheart Records, Apparition, and FLO TV was held at the Interluxe Lounge just before the show.

It was fitting that Jett ignited her set at Park City’s Harry O’s with “Bad Reputation,” one of the biggest hits of her solo career. She followed with her No. 1 charting anthem “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” and her ode to self-loathing, “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

The standing-room-only audience joined Jett with boisterous screams and shouts of “Oh! Yeah!” during the sassy “Do You Wanna Touch” and gave the stuttering “ch-ch-ch’s” during Jett’s kiss-off version of “Cherry Bomb.”

Dakota Fanning’s porcelain-doll features were swathed in exotic makeup and her blond hair coiffed into a feathery shag; she raised her umpteenth shot of sake and cast a knowing glance at Kristen Stewart. The “Twilight” star held Fanning’s gaze briefly and toasted back, looking every inch the tough rocker chick, with her matching black shag hairdo, spiked bracelet and razor-blade charm necklace.

The actresses clinked glasses and giggled.

With downtown Los Angeles’ Kyoto Grand Hotel standing in for a bustling Tokyo sushi joint last summer, the teen stars were on the set of the coming-of-age drama “The Runaways” — in character, with Fanning as Cherie Currie, the wild-child lead singer of the titular all-girl rock group, and Stewart portraying Joan Jett, its electric-guitar-wielding, ‘tude-copping founder. Between the years 1975 and ‘79, the Runaways packed shows from coast to coast, toured the world and racked up hits before self-immolating in a blaze of drugs, jealousies and in-fighting.

In a small article posted at Showbiz Spy, Dakota gives us a few more details about the kissing-scene she will be doing with co-star Kristen Stewart in The Runaways.

DAKOTA Fanning says she got very close to Kristen Stewart while the pair filmed their new movie, Joan Jett biopic The Runaways.
“I really enjoyed doing that subject matter for the first time in a biopic, because it really happened — it’s not just a made-up story about a 15-year-old running wild,” said Dakota, who plays Cherie Currie, lead singer of ’70s rock band The Runaways. “It’s a true story of her evolution from good Valley Girl to bad rock ’n’ roll princess.”
Speaking about her kiss with Stewart, Fanning said it’s pretty passionate.
“It’s passionate — they were just as close as two could get,” she said.
The Runaways hits theaters March 19.

According to News In Film, Dakota is currently in the talks for Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke’s If I Stay. Read more about the movie and Dakota’s possible role below.

Dakota Fanning may be taking the lead role in Summit Entertainment’s If I Stay for Catherine Hardwicke, the director who started the Twilight saga that now generates paychecks for Fanning.

Pajiba’s source says the 15-year-old actress is in negotiations to star as Mia Hill, a young woman who gets into a car accident and goes through an out of body experience while in a coma.

I think if I was flying around outside my chiseled exterior, I’d go get into trouble, because who’s going to know and, if they somehow could, I have the perfect alibi. “What do you mean I learned something I shouldn’t? I was in a coma!”

While the studio replaced Hardwicke for the supposedly larger scale Twilight Saga: New Moon, they’re still in business with her for this film… for now. Hardwicke is attached to a multitude of movies, including this, Maximum Ride, a possible feature film version of “21 Jump Street,” a re-imaging of Red Riding Hood, and Hamlet with Emile Hirsch. Summit wants to put this in production as early as summer 2010, so Hardwicke will direct depending on availability.

We got some awesome news for you today via Hollywood Reporter. The movie has both found a distributor and a release date which is set to March 19!

Bob Berney and Bill Pohlad’s Apparition has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Floria Sigismondi’s “The Runaways.”

The acquisition has taken place more than a month ahead of the film’s planned world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in late January. Apparition plans to release the film March 19.

The biographical story of the friendship between Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, who went on to form the groundbreaking all-girl rock band the Runaways in the ’70s, the indie film stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as the band’s teenage guitarist and singer, respectively. The fact that both actors star in the super-successful “Twilight” franchise likely played a part in the film’s appeal.

Sigismondi based her screenplay on the book “Neon Angel: the Cherie Currie Story” by Currie.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dakota’s New Moon co-star Ashley Greene says some nice things about her. Read the excerpt of the Dakota-related parts below.

Untitled-1What was your favorite scene to film?
Going to Italy and being part of the Volturi scene was great. Dakota Fanning is fantastic. I was watching her movies before I was even acting. And I got to work with Michael Sheen and he’s an incredible, phenomenal actor and it was great to be able to learn from him and watch him do the scene and watch how it translates to the screen.
